Brain Waves

Brain waves reflect the pattern of activity in the brain. Your central nervous system works because of the changes in the electrical signals of the cells. When one neuron communicates with another, electric current in the form of nerve impulse propagate. Your doctor can easily detect the signals through a machine called EEG or the electroencephalogram. The wave patterns displayed in the medical equipment is a predictor of the functions of the brain. Here are the types of brain waves.

When you are consciously alert, agitated or afraid, the beta brain waves are visible in the EEG results. The activity of the brain, with frequencies ranging from 13 to 60 pulses per second, registers in the Hertz scale. It starts when you engage in mental activities. The beta brain waves are the features of a strongly active mind. For example, if you are in a casual conversation, your beta is present. If you are taking an examination, your brain waves are mostly of this type. 


The alpha brain waves are the opposite of the beta. When you are in a relaxed state, you expect more of these signals in your brain. If you relax after taking an examination or take time to stop your work and meditate, you will have them as the most predominant result in the EEG. 


Higher amplitude but slower frequency characterizes the theta waves. It has four to seven cycles per second. It reflects the emotional experiences and subconscious mind of the person. If you have psychic experiences, the profound manifestation occurs during the theta level. 


If you are in deep sleep, unconsciousness or in catalepsy, you are in the delta level. The signals are in greatest amplitude but of the slowest frequency. The cycle is between 1.5 to 4 cycles per second. The measurements never reach zero; otherwise, that would mean you are brain dead. 

Whatever age or gender you are, you experience these brain waves in your organ. The brain wave activity helps your physician understand your state of consciousness.
