Oseltamivir Review

Oseltamivir is used as a treatment for influenza. Created in the Gilead Sciences laboratories, the drug is sold with the brand name Tamiflu by a pharmaceutical company in Switzerland called Hoffman-La Roche. In Japan, the drug is marketed through the same brand name by Chugai Pharmaceutical Co. Wherever the medication is available, too, it can only be purchased with a doctor’s prescription.

Oseltamivir Dosage

Coming in both liquid suspension and capsule forms, Oseltamivir is an antiviral medication. It must be taken twice in a day to lessen the severity of the symptoms of flu. If it is used to prevent flu, it can be taken once in a day. The drug must be taken without fail and the body requires a certain amount of the medication in the blood so that the influenza virus would be eliminated properly. A patient also has to make sure that for as long as he or she has prescription, Oseltamivir must be used.

Before taking Oseltamivir, it is normal for patients to submit a comprehensive medical history so that the effects of the drugs would be checked accordingly. The drug is not recommended for people who have a history of having heart, kidney, liver and lung diseases, as well as disorders of the immune system. Oseltamivir may not be used by pregnant women, too. The components of the drug may harm the fetus and even a nursing baby may be affected since the drug can be absorbed through breastfeeding.

Side Effects

Oseltamivir may promote the development of some symptoms, but that does not necessarily mean that the patient is in danger. The following are considered normal by medical professionals and thus must not raise warning flags: dizziness, insomnia, cough, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain and diarrhea. When the behavior of the patient starts changing, though, it would be best to look for immediate attention from your doctor. Physical side effects like itching, hives, skin rashes, hoarseness and difficulty in breathing should guide you towards your physician’s clinic, too.

The FDA, though, released a recent notice that the drug may promote neuropsychiatric effects on people who are taking them. A study in Japan have found that Oseltamivir encouraged abnormal mental behavior on over 50 million influenza patients. Found to be more prominent among young patients, Oseltamivir had been found to contribute to the swift development and immediate manifestations of delirium episodes.

It is evident, then, that the medication must be used only with a doctor’s approval. Taking the drug without a medical professional’s assistance may prove more harmful than beneficial. You need a doctor’s opinion on whether use of Oseltamivir would solve your influenza problem.

Regular visits to your doctor must be maintained if you are taking Oseltamivir. This way, your symptoms and physical reactions would be observed better. In the case of abnormal reactions, you would be better off knowing what to do earlier, too, rather than later.
